Voluntary suspension
In Ichi the Killer, there is a disturbing scene (one of the many, many disturbing scenes in the movie) where a yakuza is tortured by his rivals by being suspended with fishing hooks passed through the skin on his back. It looked fairly painful; so I was surprised to learn that there are people who suspend themselves for fun. Fans of body suspension recently had a convention — Rhode Island SusCon — and there are pictures. Before I saw the images, I had never considered that someone might voluntarily undergo yakuza torture, but apparently some people have odd tastes…
