God exists, and he works at Studio Ghibli

Studio Ghibli is making a film based on Ursula Le Guin’s Earthsea series. The English title is Tales from Earthsea (the Japanese Gedo Senki means something like Ged’s War Chronicle). Apparently, it will be based mostly on the third book of Earthsea (The Farthest Shore). And, if you read the director’s blog (well, its English translation), it seems that Goro Miyazaki actually groks Le Guin’s philosophy. One can expect that the anime will have more to it than just dragons and boats.

If you are a fan of Ghibli and Le Guin (like your humble author), then at this point you should be dancing with absurd happiness.

The movie is coming out in July. And The Hawks have promised to make the fansub their top priority.

Alas, Studo Ghibli’s official site is done entirely in Japanese; however, fan-translated English info about the movie can be found here. For more information, here is an interview with Suzuki Toshio (the producer of most Ghibli movies) that talks about negotiations with Le Guin and explains why the movie is directed by Goro instead of Hayao Miyazaki.
