How to not support the RIAA

The Recording Industry Ass. of America are not nice people. They lobby to make it illegal to record digital radio — or to make a device capable of doing so. They are suing thousands of “pirates”– except some of those they accuse of piracy are grandmothers who have never owned a computer. The accuracy of RIAA’s accusations are highly questionable; however, those accused “pirates” find it cheaper to settle out of court, for $3000-4000, than to pay a lawyer and fight RIAA’s charges. This is called legal extortion. And if you can’t even afford the settlement? Well, the RIAA recommended one endebted MIT student to quit college so that she could pay her settlement.

Unfortunately, most music released in the US is under RIAA labels. So how do you make sure that your dollars aren’t going to fund assholes?

Enter RIAA Radar. It allows you to search by artist or UPC code to check whether the label is a member of the RIAA or not. Use it before buying your next CD!
