Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Streetfight 2006

An Australian artist called Paul Robertson has created a black-and-white animation in the style of classic arcade beat-em-up games. It is called Pirate Baby’s Cabana Battle Streetfight 2006. It is as utterly brilliant as its title suggests it would be. The heroes are great. The enemies are great. The super attacks are downright amazing. It is very funny, both in of itself, and in the way it pokes fun at the genre. Watch it. It is only 112 MB.

Do people even make beat-em-ups any more? Paul Robertson’s work suggests that the beat-em-up genre deserves to be resurrected on modern hardware.

Continuing with the theme of game-based movies, it looks like I’m not the only one surprised at the lack of critical acclaim for Silent Hill. Critics give it scores like 10/100 (New York Times), or 29/100 (Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes). However, actual viewers give it >75/100. Perhaps the people who go pay $10 to watch Silent Hill tend to be precisely the ones who would like that sort of movie, and so tend to give it a higher score? Nah. I say the critics are simply wrong. Also: Wikipedia claims that

In the original script, there were only female characters. After submitting a new script, the script was returned to Gans with a memo saying “there are no men!”. When Sean Bean was added to the cast the script was approved.

So there you have it. Sean Bean’s useless and ill-acted role was added only to make a better gender balance (among the human characters).

Finally, as I had suggested, some fans of Silent Hill the game do hate Silent Hill the movie. It seems that the game’s plot was much better. I am guessing that’s partially because Sean Bean wasn’t in it.
