UK terror plot

The British police arrested 21 people for a plot to blow up ten UK->US flights with liquid explosives. (Naturally, paranoid airport security have now banned nearly all carry-on luggage. Next time a terror plot is discovered, I imagine they will start requiring all passengers to stip naked and get a full cavity search.)

In any case, congratulations Scotland Yard. Excellent work, really. But please tell me, how the hell would biometric ID cards or the ability to detain people for 3 months without charge have helped? The 21 terrorist supects were watched for months by undercover agents, and were simultaneously arrested in night-time raids after enough evidence of their plan was discovered. So why are you asking citizens to surrender their civil liberties if you can already foil terror plots with normal investigatory techniques?
